Work Visas & Permits in New Zealand
To work in New Zealand the immigration department requires foreign visitors to have either a Work Visa or Work Permit. Those not requiring a visa or permit to work in New Zealand are:
- NZ citizen or a NZ resident permit holder
- Australian Citizen or an Australian resident who holds a current Australian resident return visa

New Zealand IRD Numbers
To work in New Zealand you will need an IRD number from New Zealand Inland Revenue. This can be applied for once you arrive in New Zealand.
As soon as you have a permanent address or employer in New Zealand you should apply for this number. You will have to fill out an application form which you can obtain from either the Addstaff office, ringing Inland Revenue (free phone 0800 227 774) or via their website www.ird.govt.nz/library/publications/irdnumber.html

New Zealand Taxes
While working in New Zealand you will be required to pay taxes. This is called Pay as you Earn (PAYE). Your employer will automatically deduct taxes from your wage depending on the amount of money you earn.
Some travelers will be eligible for tax refunds when they leave New Zealand. However, you must make a formal claim with Inland Revenue. Approximately one month before you leave New Zealand, contact the Inland Revenue Department on free phone 0800 227 774. They will send you the appropriate forms for you to complete when you have finished working.
